■ Cultural History
Gaoyou City is situated in
the Yangtze River Delta, i,e,in the North Side of the Opening
Economic Development Zone along the Yangtze River , Jiangsu Province
. the Beijing -Shanghai expressway and the Beijing-Hanzhou Grand
Canal run through the city from the north to the south. The bridge
across the canal, the highway in the Lake Area and the Gaoyou's
Zhuhu(Pearls Lake)lock combine the both sides of the Canal. The
total area of the whole city is 1963 square kilometers and the
population has reached 830 thousand (including 150 thousand in
the city proper) .It has jurisdiction over 19 townships and a
Hui- nationality township. Early in the Qin Dynasty, here a post
pavilion was set up Hence the name "Gaoyou" has come
into being. In 2000 cities and towns in China, it is the unique
city whose name is "Post".Gaoyou is prosperous in economy,
convenient in transprtation and thriving in commerce.It has a
long cultural history and excellent environment and plentiful
resources. Now Gaoyou has been building a modern city with its
splendid ancient culture.

■ Cultural Heritage
and Landscape
Gaoyou is one
of the famous historic and cultural cities appraised by Jiangsu
Provincial Government. It has a long history and a great deal
of scenery. There are 59 key state preservation relics such as
the Longqiu Cultural relics and the ancient Yucheng Posthouse.
Thesuccessful excavation of the Longqiuzhuang relics which is
called a bright pearl of prehistoric culture in Middle Jiangsu
by the archaeologists has dated the history of Gaoyou back 7000
years.

The Yucheng Posthouse built in the 8 year of Hongwu's reign
in the Ming Dynasty is the biggest and well-preserved ancient
posthouse in China. The profound history and culture of Gaoyou
fostered Qin Shaoyou, the well-known poet in the Song Dynasty,
Wang Nianshun and Wang Yinzhi (father and son), the celebrated
classics interpreters in the Qing Dynasty, Sun Yunzhu, the modern
paleontologist and Wang Chenqi , the contemporary writer.

1. Climate: Gaoyou is located in the North Latitude 32o47'
and the East Longitude 119o25'( in the South of Jianghuai Plain),
so it belongs to the subtropics monsoon marine climate. The
leading wind is south-east all around the year. The annual average
wind speed is 3.6 m/s; the annual average temperature is 15oC;
the annual average atmospheric pressure is 1016 millibar; the
annual average precipitation is 1030mm; the annual average relative
humidity is 67%; the frost-free season is 217 days. Gaoyou is
temperate and moist and the four seasons are quite distinct.

Geology: In Gaoyou, the ground is even and at an elevation of
2 - 3 m (According to Qindao Level). The ground is endowed with
rather good conditions for construction. It is mainly made up
of clay, The floor is very thick with pressure capacity of 8t/
m2. Therefore, piling is unnecessary for common buildings.
3. Hydrology: Its annual average water level is 1.4 m, ranging
from the lowest level of 1 m to the highest flood level of 3.6m.
The flood control standard level is decided to be 4 m high on
condition that a flood reaches in a century.

4. Resources : In Gaoyou, there are plenty of rivers
and lakes. With its plentiful produces , the Gaoyou Lake of blue
waves is the third large freshwater lake in Jiangsu and the sixth
large freshwater lake in China. The lake teems with over 60 varieties
of plants and animals such as fish, shrimps, shellfish, water
shield and reeds. The Gaoyou's Speckled Duck is one of the three
best duck strains in China. The salted duck egg has been listed
in the state-preserved produces in their original areas. The double-yolk
duck is famous at home and abroad.

Survey
The industrial
economy develops fast. In Gaoyou, there are about 3000 industrial
enterprises, most of which belong to the following sectors: machinery,
light industry, textile, mechanical industry, building materials
and electronics. These sectors form a complete industrial system.
A lot of competitive products are sold well domestically and internationally,
such as motorcycles, water pumps, petroleum machinery, environment
protection facilities, series of electric machinery, electric
tools, cables, new types of electric light sources, electronic
devices, pharmaceutical chemistry, clothing. cotton textile, silk,
, suitcases, shoes and cereal foods, oils etc.The enterprises
which produce chemical fertilizer, cement, glass, steel and building

good conditions for production. Gaoyou is also known as a region
teeming with fish and rice. The agriculture of Gaoyou develops
in a comprehensive way . Grain, cotton ,edible oil, pig-raising,
rabbit-raising, fishery, shrimps crabs, forestery, silkworm-raising,
fruit, vegetables all develop well. In the year 2000, the output
of grain is 620,000 tons; ginned cotton , 8,000 tons; oil-crops,
38,000 tons; aquatic products, 95,000 tons ; silkworm cocoons,
1.7 tons; forest covering percentage , 15%. Famous quality products
are well -known far and near, such as Gaoyou ducks, Gaoyou Salted
eggs, preserved eggs, Qinyou Dongtang ( a crunch candy), Fine
Rice and Qinyou Liquor-saturated Crabs. Recently, Gaoyou City
has been conferred the title of "the Advanced Unit"
in afforestation, construction of irrigation works, the production
of grain and cotton in China.
